Nuclear Weapons in World Politics
Course Outline
Nuclear bombs are a crucial component of today's political and strategic global landscapes. Due to their unmatchable destruction power, nuclear weapons have been a source of fascination and fear. They are both a symbol of power and madness, with enthusiastic supporters and passionate opponents.
In this one-semester seminar, we will explore the controversial role of nuclear weapons in international relations. The course is divided into the three following blocks: (1) Technical aspects, basic concepts, and Institutions; (2) Deterrence and Proliferation; (3) Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
In the first block, we discuss what make nuclear weapons unique, as well as the main concepts and institutions that surround those arms. We explore historical aspects and some of the primary institutions that target weapons control and non-proliferation. The second block focuses on deterrence thinking and nuclear strategy from the perspective of nuclear-weapon-owners. In the last block, we explore theories and institutions that focus on non-proliferation and disarmament. We also tackle new issues, such as nuclear terrorism, the nuclear ban movement, and critical approaches to nuclear politics.
