Kommentare/ Inhalte: This course presents an advanced topic in Ethics and IT, the specific topic of the course may vary between semesters. In WiSe 19/20, the topic is Ethics and Emotional AI. Computers and robots are increasingly capable of interacting with humans emotionally, and this capability is explored extensively in the field of affective computing, which focuses on the study and development of systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, process, and simulate human affects. The capability to identify and react to individuals' emotional states and to (actively) influence them raises a number of significant ethical issues, however. For example, in the film "Her" (2013), a man falls in love with an OS that expresses love and care towards him. Is such an expression of love and care merely deceptive and manipulative? Or, does the OS geniunely love and care? Can it? Deception and manipulation are some of the important ethical issues in relation to developing and designing information technology with affective capacities. In this course, we shall attempt to answer the follow questions: (i) what are emotions? (ii) what are the relations between emotions and ethical life? (iii) what are the ways computers, robots, and AI interact with humans, and (iv) what are the ethical challenges raised by information technology that is capable to interact with humans emotionally?
Lernziel: Students (i) will be acquainted with key concepts and major approaches in ethics and emotional AI; (ii) will demonstrate a deeper understanding in (a specific research topic in) Ethics and IT; (iii) should acquire the skills to conduct philosophical and ethical analysis of information technology.
Literatur: Reading list will be announced at the first lecture.
