The aim of this interdisciplinary introductory course is threefold: It will firstly clarify the place of the social sciences within science in comparison to the natural sciences. It will then introduce key social science concepts such as social roles, norms, and organisation. Thirdly, the course will use the case of climate change communication as one particularly important example of science communication to introduce both the logics of the mass media and the study of the interplay of scientists, journalists and other actors in public debates about climate change.

A cross-cutting theme will be to introduce social-scientific reasoning and how this can complement and contribute to an integrated study of climate change. Course lectures are accompanied by small group work and seminar discussions to gain practical experience in reading, writing and critical thinking in social science contexts.
