Kommentare/ Inhalte: How are languages structurally similar or different across the world? How do we define properties to be compared, and how do we go about comparing individual languages or language families? In this course, we will look at how the field of comparative linguistics/typology has entered the domain of sign language research. Although still an underresearched field, we now have at least some linguistic description of a fair amount of sign languages of the world, which is a prerequisite for comparing the structure of different languages. With more languages described, we can create typologies (groupings) across languages, based on some property that we have defined. This includes structural phenomena such as word order, argument encoding, and morphological categories, but also lexical phenomena such as shared motivations in word formation, co-lexification, and form and meaning correspondences across languages in terms of both language contact and shared conceptual categorization. We will look at the previous work that has been carried out within sign language typology, and discuss the prospects of future work based on developments in terms of both academic and linguistic developments.
