Kommentare/ Inhalte: The goal of this course is to give an overview to usage-based linguistics as applied to sign languages. Sign language linguistics is still young within the field of linguistics, but with this area of research growing, more theoretical frameworks have been applied in the research and a crystallization of different theoretical directions/schools can be seen. With access to more data (e.g. sign language corpora), usage-based linguistics – looking at how language is shaped, changed, and maintained in a language community based on actual language use – has gained ground. In opposition to some traditional (e.g. generative) views on language, usage-based linguistics and the theoretical frameworks encompassed by it – seek to include "external" factors and their effect on language, rather than viewing the linguistic system as an independent cognitive module in the brain. This includes looking at frequency effects on language (how language changes with its use), analogy in word and construction formation, and the impact of social factors in language communities. In this course, we will explore some of the recent developments in theoretical sign language linguistics, focusing on studies that adopt a usage-based view of linguistic theory, and discuss the impact of methods and assumptions on our description of language.
